Massive death and injury toll of motorcyclists in MK prompts new safety courses

In a bid to reduce the horrific toll, they are aim aiming to educate post-test motorcyclists of all ages.

And part of the training will be discussing what went wrong in the grim real-life cases of collisions in MK.

Tuition will be given by the Institute of Advanced Motorists and the cost of each course will be just £20.

This week Councillor Matt Clifton, Cabinet member for road safety, said: “I would strongly urge anyone who rides a motorcycle to take advantage of these safety training days.”

He added: “The statistics show that this kind of road user has very high casualty numbers and this needs to be reduced significantly.”

The training, which is supported by the fire service and Thames Valley Police, is specifically designed to make riders safer and more confident on the road”, said Mr Clifton.

The first training session will be on March 19 at Great Holm Fire Station. The others will be held at Bletchley Fire Station on May 7, July 9 and September 17.

Starting at 9am, each day will start with classroom theory covering driving techniques as well as analysing what went wrong in previous local collisions.

Afterwards trained motorcyclists will carry out an on-road assessment of each course member.

One of the experts on hand will be Rod Hardie from the institute of Advanced Motorcyclists.

He said: “We are keen to pass our experience and knowledged gained over the years on to other people. There will be many hints and tips in order to allow them to become a safer and more confident rider who is much more aware of the dangers and pitfalls out there.”
