THE first three chefs in this year’s Milton Keynes Food Awards have been named.

Saj Khan, who won the Indian Chef of the Year contest last year while at Calcutta Brasserie, will represent his new restaurant, Silk Road in Central Milton Keynes.

His replacemnet at Calcutta Brasserie, Abdul Salam, and Hilton Milton Keynes’ Sous Chef, Zbynek Zatloukal, will also compete for the Chef of the Year contest.

The competition is just one category in the MK Food & Leisure Awards 2013, backed by the Citizen.

The awards, launched last year, aim to honour the best restaurants, pubs, hotels, chefs and gyms in MK.

The Chef of the Year contest will be decided by a live cook-off at Milton Keynes College.

Winners of all the awards will then be revealed at a gala evening at Jury’s Inn in CMK on May 12.

Zbynek Zatloukal, from the Czech Republic, has been working as a chef for seven years.

He said: “I believe it to be the best choice of job ever.

“During my school years, I wasn’t the best at academic subjects, however in practical lessons I excelled in the various disciplines such as fruit and vegetable carving. I also undertook a sommelier and bar course.

“I particularly enjoy the fruit and vegetable carving, and there is nothing as rewarding as to pick up a carrot, apple or melon and transform it into something artistic and wonderful.”

Zbynek has even previously won second place in a European Junior carving section competition.

Liverpool fan Abdul Salam came to Calcutta Brasserie from Birmingham’s Cafe Rouge last year.

His dream is to be Head Chef at his own Michelin starred restaurant and he has previously taken part in the BBC’s Good Food shows, working alongside Gordon Ramsay and Antony Worrall Thompson.
