Milton Keynes bereavement charity appeal for volunteers

Milton Keynes bereavement charity, Child Bereavement UK is appealing for volunteers to help support the team at its offices in Fox Milne, with many flexible opportunities available.

Child Bereavement UK supports families when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child faces bereavement.

The charity also trains professionals such as teachers and nurses, helping them better understand and meet the needs of grieving families in their working life.

Child Bereavement UK has supported families in Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas via outreach work in Children’s Centres since 2011, but was pleased to open its own centre in January 2016 after a greater need was established.

In addition to offering face to face individual, couple and family support sessions, the charity, more recently has also started to host groups for parents, children and young people. These groups allow children and their parent or carer to get together and express their feelings through play and creative activities.

“It has been really helpful to come to the groups, listen to other people’s experiences and know that our grieving children’s behaviour is normal.” said Alicia, a widowed mother who attended support groups with her children aged seven and two.

Currently the group sessions run twice a year, with each programme taking place over four Saturdays and the charity is looking for volunteers to help supervise.

Maria McDonald has volunteered with the charity since October:“It is lovely to come in and know that my time and commitment is making a difference to families in my local area,’” she said.
