Milton Keynes Council brings back in-year admissions for schools

Milton Keynes Council will reintroduce in-year admissions waiting lists for community and voluntary controlled schools this month.

The lists were removed last year in a bid to support schools to reduce the number of pupils who move around within the academic year.

However when families moved house, the need to keep reapplying for a local place when schools were already full was found to be time consuming and difficult.

An official consultation process showed support for waiting lists.

Families who would like to make an application for a school place for September are able to do so from this month. If there is no place available at the school of preference, the application will be declined and the family will be asked if they would like their child’s name to be placed on the waiting list for that school.

The waiting list will be held in order of the school’s published over-subscription criteria, which means that a child’s position on the list can go down as well as up as new children are added.

If a place becomes available it will then be automatically offered to the child at the top of the list, without the need for the family to re-apply at any point during the next academic year.

The process will vary for schools which are their own admissions authority (voluntary aided, foundation and academy schools), depending on whether that particular school holds a list.
