Milton Keynes Council has appointed its next chief executive following the departure of David Hill, it was announced last night.

Council Leader Andrew Geary has confirmed Carole Mills will take over the reins at Milton Keynes Council in the summer.

Carole is currently Deputy Chief Executive and Corporate Director for Resources at Nottingham City Council - one of England’s Core Cities - where she has worked for six years.

Carole, who qualified as an accountant in 1992, also holds the Chief Finance Officer role and on accepting the award said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been offered the post of Chief Executive at Milton Keynes Council.

“I am really looking forward to taking up the role in the near future and settling down in a new home within the borough.”

Chief Executive David Hill, who joined the council in April 2009, has led a sustained period of organisational improvement and transformation during his time at the council.

He said: “I am delighted to welcome Carole aboard as our new Chief Executive. She joins us at a very exciting time in a period of sustained improvement, bringing very solid local government credentials, as well as a sound business acumen to the organisation.

“Her experience as deputy chief executive at one of the country’s Core Cities will only further enhance Milton Keynes’ own ambitions to be in the Top Ten and Premier League of UK cities in the next decade.”

Labour Group Leader, Cllr Peter Marland added: “I am pleased that after a very thorough process that attracted a number of very high quality applicants, that we have found a new Chief Executive with great qualities to take the borough forward in challenging but exciting times for Local Government.

“I look forward to working with her to deliver the ambitions of the citizens of Milton Keynes.”

Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Douglas McCall added: “I am really pleased that the Council has agreed to appoint Carole Mills.

“She has a depth of knowledge and experience and will be a real asset to Milton Keynes.”

Previously, Carole was at Walsall Council as a member of its recovery team, following a Government intervention in 2002/3.

She went on to be a key member of the council’s senior management, securing a reputation for delivering major performance improvement, and was instrumental in Walsall becoming one of the fastest improving councils in the country.

Carole started her local government career in her home city of Coventry, within the Direct Service Organisation trading environment at Coventry City Council, instilling a career-long commercial focus to her work.

She previously held posts in the health service and private sector.
