Milton Keynes' founding father sees transport dream come true

A man who helped plan a state-of-the-art transport system for Milton Keynes almost half a century ago has finally come face to face with the reality.

Forward-thinking architect Bill Berrett created a proposal for driverless cars and buses when the new city was still in its design stages in the 1960s.

But his ideas, which included a monorail system – never saw the light of day.

This month Bill paid a visit to MK’s Transport Catapult, specially to view the new driverless pods.

“It allowed Bill to compare his original vision with
the latest transport innovations being developed here,” said a spokesman.

The Transport Systems Catapult is currently utilising three “pods” in the city in a technology trial aimed at developing autonomous transport vehicles for the public.

The spokesman said: “It is hoped Bill’s vision will become a reality later in the year, when the Transport Systems Catapult aim to begin operating the LUTZ Pathfinder pods fully autonomously.”
