Milton Keynes killer avoids deportation to Jamaica

The Supreme court has ruled that Eric Johnson cannot be deported as it would violate his human rights.

Johnson was sentenced to nine years in prison for killing 30-year-old David Williams in his Oldbrook Boulevard home by hitting him with a piece of wood and stabbing him 10 years ago.

Mr Williams was allowing Johnson to stay with him in return for a supply of crack cocaine, a judge heard at the trial.

The then Home Secretary Theresa May said the killer should be deported to Jamaica, where he had been born to a British father and Jamaican mother out of wedlock.

Johnson, 30, argued that he was the illegitimate son of a British man and said he should not be deported as it would amount to discrimination.

He lost his case in the Court of Appeal earlier this year but has now secured a victory at the Supreme Court.

This week the judges said that to remove Johnson would be to punish him for ‘the accident of his birth outside of wedlock’ as he would have been entitled to British citizenship if his parents had been married.
