City lawyers are grieving a popular young solicitor who died in a freak accident at his birthday party.
Gary O’Donoghue is believed to have accidentally fallen down a disused chute used for laundry or rubbish at a London block of flats.
Friends had thrown the party for him at their Shoreditch apartment to celebrate his 29th birthday.
They searched for Gary for more than 24 hours before his body was discovered at the bottom of the chute.
Gary worked for Milton Keynes-based EMW law firm and specialised in corporate banking work.
He was also a talented footballer and at weekends played for UCL Academicals, which is part of the Amateur Football Combination league.
On Saturday his team had a minute’s silence on the left wing, where Gary played.
“He was an excellent player and a very popular, likeable man,” said a friend.
“He was a true gentleman and nobody had a bad word to say about him.”
Police are satisfied there were no suspicious circumstances around the accident, though it is not known how Gary came to be near the opening of the chute.
His funeral is due to be held on Monday.
