Mr Lancaster, MP for Milton Keynes North since 2005, paid tribute to Mrs May on Twitter this afternoon.

He wrote: "A very moving speech from the PM. She has given everything for the country during a difficult time. It’s been a pleasure to work for her. Thank you, Theresa May."

Councillor Alex Walker, leader of the Conservatives in Milton Keynes, added: "I thought it was a very dignified speech today. The Prime Minister has been a true servant of the UK and it's sad to see that thrown away.

"Now I'm keen that the party moves forward to find a candidate who can unify the Conservatives and the country, who can deliver Brexit and also the things that matter on issues such as housing and the NHS.

"I think that needs to be a One Nation compassionate Conservative."
