Milton Keynes MPs give their views on disabled benefit cuts

He said: “Clearly there were serious concerns. I personally voiced my concerns to the Treasury on the proposals in advance of the Budget and I am pleased the Government have now confirmed that the plans have been dropped.”

Mr Stewart did, however, vote firmly in favour of cutting Employment Support Allowance payments to many disabled people earlier this month.

“It is important to remember that this Government is spending £50 billion a year to support disabled people. That is the second highest in the world,” he said.

Milton Keynes North MP Mark Lancaster was more enigmatic about his views on benefit cuts.

He said: “We need a benefits system that instead of trapping people into welfare dependency helps everyone to achieve their full potential and live independent lives, but at the same time supports the most vulnerable. “We must remember that people are not statistics and that in our efforts to promote a fairer system these changes ultimately affect people’s lives and must be judged to be fair.

But local Cabinet member for social care, Nigel Long, was equally scathing about both MPs.

He said: “I believe we have two remote MPs who have constantly supported a Government that has attacked disabled people. They should thank their lucky stars that they are not disabled. If they were they would soon learn about the challenges disabled people face daily. Attacking their low incomes highlights a lock of understanding and a lack of care. Shameful!”
