Milton Keynes pupils petition for government to ban plastic drinking straws

Young Milton Keynes pupils who decided that plastic straws suck have launched a petition to the government in a bid to get them banned throughout the UK.

The class of 9 and 10 year olds from Oxley Park Academy say the straws are “atrocious” for the environment and paper ones should be used instead.

Their petition has already gathered more than 6,300 signatures.

The youngsters state: “Marine life can mistake plastic for what it normally eats, causing the animals to ingest the plastic. If we don’t stop using straws, there could more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050. Is this the world we want to pass onto our future generations?”

The class hopes to gather 100,000 signatures and send the petition to Michael Gove.

They have written and sent persuasive letters to local businesses and even created a class campaign video for people to watch.

The petition states: “Your signature can really help us make this happen. Scotland are now banning straws by 2019 and for Michael Gove to do the same he needs to know how many people support this. We hope you can help us reach our goal of 100,000 signatures by signing and sharing the petition. Thank you for your support.”
