Milton Keynes to be ‘on par with New York’ following area code enforcement

From October 1 this year, everyone in Milton Keynes using a landline phone will have to dial the full 01908 area code for local calls - even if they are calling their neighbour.

The move has been welcomed by Biztech, the business and technology forum for the new city and the South East Midlands.

Fredi Nonyelu, the chairman of Biztech, said: “This move will create enough new numbers to last between five and 10 years, after then Milton Keynes will have two codes, putting the city on a par with New York.

“This will prevent the disruption and upheaval of extending the numbers, which has been the policy of regulator Ofcom up to this point.

“Once again, Milton Keynes is at the forefront of technological changes but this time ones which minimise disruption in the long term.

“Biztech welcomes that and the comparison with one of the leading cities in the world.”

01908 is the area code for Milton Keynes, as well as Bradwell Abbey, Hanslope, Newport Pagnell, Shenley Church End, Stoke Goldington, Stony Stratford, Woburn Sands, Wolverton and Yardley Gobion.

From October 1 it will be necessary to always include the 01908 area code when dialling 01908 numbers, even if calling locally.

Until the end of September 2014 the area code remains optional when dialling between landline phones in the area; calls may be made locally using just the six-digit local number.

Only the ability to dial between 01908 area phones without the code is being removed - the full national phone numbers in use by residents and businesses stay the same.

Long-distance calls to and from Milton Keynes remain unchanged, as do calls to and from mobile phones.
