If proof were needed that some people never learn, MK College staff will be attempting a three peaks challenge for the second year running - this time the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in support of Willen Hospice.

After completing last year’s event it might be thought that the staff at MK College eat lengthy, gruelling and dangerous walking challenges for breakfast. In fact, the driving force behind the adventure is not the sense of satisfaction and close bonding achieved by completing the challenge as a team, but the prospect of raising money for the valuable work carried out by local charity, Willen Hospice.

On July 5, 23 members of teaching, support and managerial staff will be attempting the tough trial in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The walk comprises three peaks, Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, totalling a twenty-five mile circuit which the group plans to complete within twelve hours.

Deputy Principal, and experienced Three-Peaker, Nick Isles, said: “The challenge last year was difficult, but it gave us all the bug to do another one and this time exceed our fundraising target.

“The training is going well. We’ve all been going on long walks at the weekends however I don’t think anything can prepare you for the actual event.

“It’s twelve hours of non-stop walking with only two fifteen minute breaks from the hostile environment and often shocking weather.

“It will undoubtedly be gruelling and tiredness will be our main obstacle.

“We are confident though as the cause is important to us as a College and community. Nothing will stop us from conquering the Yorkshire Dales.”

The team is hoping to raise in excess of £10,000 for Willen Hospice and have already received generous donations from ASHE Construction, Century Facades, Hewitsons LLP, Total BUILD and Designcubed.

Free transport hire and discounted equipment has also been supplied by EdenMEC, Lime Square and Cotswold Camping.
