City VIPs gathered to celebrate the official launch of MK’s brand new radio station MKFM.

Three weeks after launching on 106.3 FM, MKFM welcomed guests to their new studios at intu Milton Keynes to thank them for their support over the past four years.

Three past mayors - Councillor Derek Eastman, Councillor Catriona Morris and Councillor Brian White - all joined in on the celebrations on Friday with current Mayor Councillor Keith McLean.

There were speeches from Mr McLean, Iain Stewart MP, MK Dons Chairman Pete Winkelman and a poem from Poet Laureate Mark Niel.

MK Dons Chairman Pete Winkelman said: “We’ve been great supporters of MKFM since we lost our dedicated radio station in Milton Keynes.

“They’ve worked hard to get on FM and supported our community on a number of different levels. We look forward to the station growing with us.”

MKFM was started by former Horizon Radio programme controller Chris Gregg in July 2011, and after five FM trial broadcasts, the station launched on DAB Digital Radio in May 2013.

It features MK Dons match coverage, a new breakfast show with Oliver, Darren & Lia and local news, sport, travel and weather, along with a fresh mix of music and support for local events, charities and businesses.

Mr Gregg said: “We’re very grateful to the hundreds of listeners and local organisations who gave messages of support and helped our licence application to succeed.”

MKFM listeners who had tweeted pictures of them tuned into 106.3 FM joined the team for a VIP night at MK Social before the station took over Wonderworld in Xscape to celebrate the FM launch.
