They are looking to recruit people to train for listening and support roles.

The branch is holding an information evening on May 5, between 7.30pm and 9pm. It will be an informal event for people to learn more about what the charity does.

“It’s a chance to come and talk to volunteers to gain insight into the role, There will be a short presentation and tea and biscuits are supplied,” said a spokesman.

A selection day for potential volunteers will then be held on May 21.

Both events will be at the Samaritans’ base on 161 Fishermead Boulevard.

Training starts after people are selected, from May 25 onwards.

After training, Listening volunteers will be able to see experienced volunteers in action before they feel ready to take their first call, said the spokesman.

“A mentor is assigned to new volunteers for approximately three months and ongoing support is always available.”

There is no need to book an appointment and anybody interested is welcome to turn up on the night.

For more details, people can call 01908 667777.

For those that cannot make the dates in May, another information evening will be held on September 22 followed by a selection day on October 1.
