A furious mum has slammed a mystery motorist who killed her family dog and broke her disabled son’s heart.
Yana the Siberian Husky was run over and left at the side of the road.
She was a constant companion to Conniburrow tot Sam White, who has Down’s Syndrome.
“In the mornings Yana would go and wake Samuel up and all day she would lay with him on the floor and play with him. Sam would even share his food with her. They were best friends,” said mum Jayne.
She accepts that the accident was probably Yana’s fault because she escaped from the garden and was running loose.
But she says the driver broke the law by failing to report the accident to the police.
“What is so upsetting is that he or she knew the dog was dead and just left it on the road and drove on,” said Jayne, who has two other children.
The family searched in vain for Yana last week before they were contacted by a vet and told of her death.
A member of the public had called the RSPCA to report a dead dog on the H2, Milners Way, on Wednesday morning.
An RSPCA worker collected the body and took her to the vets, where Jayne’s address was revealed on the dog’s microchip.
“We are so grateful to the person who reported seeing the body, and we’d also like to thank the RSPCA and the vet,” said Jayne. But we are deeply saddened to lose our dog and Sam is devastated to lose his companion.”
