An MP has thrown his weight behind the restoration of a 200-year-old city gem.
Mark Lancaster is encouraging everyone to vote for the refurbishment of the Iron Trunk Aqueduct, which carries the Grand Union Canal across the Great Ouse just outside Old Wolverton.
People will get the chance to secure £60,000 for the structure’s restoration after Wolverton and Greenleys Town Council bid for a chance to take a slice of the Jubilee People’s Millions, marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
The Aqueduct will go head to head with a project in neighbouring Wellingborough on ITV’s People’s Millions on Monday, June 27 from 6pm, on the news show, Anglia Tonight.
Mr Lancaster said: “The Iron Trunk is a gem – but unfortunately it is a hidden one, and it really needs a bit of TLC. As Milton Keynes is a relatively new city our heritage is sometimes overlooked, but we have history in abundance, and this feat of engineering is just one example of that. Restoring it to its former glory would be a great way to celebrate the Aqueduct’s 200th birthday and the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.”
The project is one of just six battling it out in the Anglia region after 2,000 bids across the country.
The phone number needed to vote will be available on http://www.peoplesmillions.org.uk/ on the morning of June 27
