A new £6 million fund to help the elderly and disabled has been launched by MK Community Foundation.

From 2015, The Margaret Powell Foundation Fund, will make £250,000 worth of grants annually, from micro grants of £200 to significant grants for larger projects.

Margaret Powell is one of Milton Keynes’ most generous philanthropists. When she died she left £3million in the capable hands of the Margaret Powell Foundation, managed by a Board of trustees which included Margaret’s nephew. The Powell family farmed Tattenhoe Bare Farm in Milton Keynes for many generations with Margaret Powell, one of the last of the family to farm the land.

The trustees asked MK Community Foundation to manage and administer the Powell Foundation’s income to utilise the Community Foundation’s connections in MK. Since then, the fund has grown significantly, giving out over £2M worth of grants in the past 22 years to local organisations supporting frail elderly and disabled people in Milton Keynes.

The Powell Foundation recently ceased operating and the trustees gifted their Foundation’s assets to MK Community Foundation. With a government match The Community Foundation has increased this gift from £4million to £6million and created the new Margaret Powell Foundation Fund.

Julia Upton, community foundation chief executive, said: ‘In recognition of this significant gift, we will be renaming our city centre building, Midsummer House, to Margaret Powell House. The MK Community Foundation team is proud to be the solution for Margaret’s generous gift. Our long-standing relationship with the trustees enables us to honour Margaret’s values and to build a lasting legacy for our city.”
