New '˜cattle class' service for rail commuters

A controversial cheap rail option for commuters has been branded as '˜cattle class' by passenger groups.

Passengers will be able to buy peak time tickets to London for as little as 50p from next month. All tickets will either be standing, or on converted bicycle seats with pedals that help to power the trains.

Reacting to the news, Commuters Association spokesman Amada Namup said: “I cannot believe that anyone thinks this is a good idea.

If people want to save money they are better off buying a ticket for just two days a week and running to London on the other three days, as their journey would then be no more than 20 miles, less than one marathon’s distance each way.

Lets call this what it is - cattle class. Cattle class which is also ideal for people who really like cycling in cramped surrounding.”

For the time being it is not clear if passengers who cycle will be sat next to windows on the trains.

One rail industry spokesman admitted that the move would be controversial.

Our studies suggest that saving money is important to passengers though,” they said. “Particularly between March 31 and April 2.”
