New online help for families of children in Milton Keynes with special educational needs

Families with children who have special educational needs can now access a new online directory of information.

The Local Offer helps families to find information about education, health and care services, as well as leisure activities and support groups.

Information is designed to be clear and easily accessible at the Milton Keynes Council website

Councillor Norman Miles, lead member for children and lifelong learning, said: “We are committed to providing information that makes life easier for families looking for support for those with special educational needs.

“The council worked with many groups and organisations including parents, health partners and schools in compiling the offer.

“It is available to access 24/7 so you can see what is on offer to help you and your child.”

The Local Offer is part of the Children and Families Act 2014 which takes effect on September 1. This also sees the introduction of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHC) which offer children, young people and their families more say in the support they receive, and greater flexibility to determine elements of their own care package.

Jason Brucass, a parent who is chair of the Parents and Carers Alliance MK said: “This is a really positive change. The EHC will allow us to work together more efficiently in the best interests of children with additional needs.”
