Number of Covid cases plummets today in Milton Keynes - but people must still be careful tonight, warn health bosses.

Over the past 24 hours 207 people have tested positive for the virus. This compares to 414 the previous day and 446 the day before that.

Yesterday saw 11 Covid-linked deaths recorded in MK. But since then no new deaths have been registered.

The news comes as city primary schools have been told they cannot open as planned on Monday and must wait two weeks until the government reviews the city's Covid infection rate.

MK secondary schools will delay opening until January 18, with students in years 11 and 13 who are facing exams to return on January 11. Children classed as vulnerable and the children of key workers can attend school as normal.

Nationally there were 55,892 cases today and 964 deaths recorded.

In MK, police, council officials and hospital bosses are all urging people to be sensible tonight and avoid a peak in infections by staying at home and following the rules when they see in the New Year.
