AN Open University researcher has returned home after being held in Israel for his part in an organised peace protest.

Dr Les Levidow, a Senior Research Fellow with the OU since 1994, was among the group of 13 people detained at Tel Aviv airport as they planned to attend events supporting Palestine.

The group began a hunger strike, which lasted several days, before they were deported from Israel on Tuesday.

An spokesman for the Open University said: “While the OU is in discussions with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office about Les’ wellbeing, it is important to note that Les has undertaken his trip to Israel in a purely personal capacity.”
