A passerby walking home in the middle of the night helped save a school hall from being destroyed by a fire.

Flames took hold of a shed behind Wavendon Gate Combined School in Gregories Drive between 1am and 2am on Monday.

As it spread towards the school, the fire damaged the changing rooms, utility room and assembly hall - forcing them all to be out of bounds.

Indoor PE lessons have been moved outside, and children are eating lunch in their classrooms, but the school opened yesterday as normal.

Headteacher Andy Cox remained optimistic and praised the passerby who called for help.

He said: “A few moments later and the school hall would have gone up in flames.

“So even though we are upset, disappointed and fed up about what happened, it could have been a lot worse.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.

Mr Cox added: “The impression I got from the police was that the fire almost certainly didn’t start itself.

“But an investigation is underway and we are appealing to anyone who may have seen anything.

“The children are asking lots of questions, as children normally do, but they are settling back into their routines.”

Anyone with information about the fire should contact Thames Valley Police on 101 quoting 112 4/5.
