Patients benefit from new health services

Patients across the city are now benefiting from improved access to sexual health services after Sexual Health Milton Keynes welcomed its first patients this week.

Sexual Health Milton Keynes is operated by AML Care Limited which was commissioned by NHS Milton Keynes to provide contraceptive and sexual health services across the local area.

The aim of the new service is to improve access after feedback found that patients were confused by having to make separate appointments to access different types of sexual health service from different providers.

Patients can now reach the service through a single point of access either by phone or online through an interactive website or ‘Virtual Hub’. This means that patients don’t need to see a GP first and can attend one of our walk-in clinics or make an appointment at a time that suits them.

Sexual Health Milton Keynes brings together the delivery of the existing Contraceptive and Sexual Health (CASH) and Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) services for adults so that they are delivered side by side for patients within the community.

The new service consists of free confidential advice, testing and treatment on contraception and sexual health, including emergency treatments, from a range of neighbourhood and community-based locations.

This means seeing people for everything from testing for all sexually transmitted infections (STIs), to offering advice and providing all available methods of contraception. The service will also provide psychosexual counselling and vasectomy. A specialist team will undertake outreach work and operate the local Chlamydia screening programme.

Specialist services are available from a main hub based at the former sexual health clinic at the Luing Cowley Outpatients department at Milton Keynes Hospital. There are also two community locations - CMK Medical Centre and Neath Hill Health Centre. Further locations are due to open later in the year.

A spokesman for AML Care said: “We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to provide sexual health services across Milton Keynes and we look forward to working hard to improve services for local patients.

“We are a well-established provider of high quality NHS services including sexual health services across the country with a successful track record of delivering services that patients really value. Our services offer improving accessibility, convenience and most importantly deliver improved health outcomes – providing good value for the NHS.”

Derys Pragnell, Senior Health Improvement Specialist at NHS Milton Keynes, said: “As well as providing easier access to contraceptive and sexual health services, this new comprehensive, integrated and confidential service will support the population of Milton Keynes to better protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy.”
