Pensioner jailed for trying to blame his 14 speeding offences on mystery woman

In an echo of the famous case of government minister Chris Huhne, Klaus Maurer admitted perverting the course of justice by lying.

The 70-year-old notched up an incredible 14 speeding offences during a nine month period between July 2014 and April last year.

Two of them were on the same day - on the A6 Bedford road.

On each occasion he lied on the official paperwork, claiming the driver of the car at the time was a woman from London.

But went police sent paperwork to the London address, it was returning stating no person of that name lived there, Oxford Crown court heard.

Thames Valley Police commenced an investigation and discovered the named woman did not live at the given address.

Maurer, of Parsley Close, Walnut Tree, admitted in police interview that he had given false information.

He was given a sentence of six months’ imprisonment and disqualified from driving for nine months.

He was also was ordered to pay £330 costs.

Investigating officer PC Steven Moses from Banbury’s Fixed Penalty Support Unit said: “The message is very clear; neither the police nor the courts will tolerate people lying when replying to speeding notices and if you are caught you can expect to receive a suitable sentence no matter what age you are.”

Former energy minister Chris Huhne hit the headlines in 2013 when he was in court for asking his wife Vicky Pryce to take his speeding points on her licence.

The disgraced Lib Dem was jailed for eight months - as was Vicky Pryce.

The judge said Mr Huhne had lied “again and again” to avoid prosecution, and Ms Price was “controlling, manipulative and devious.”
