Anti-racism protest planned for Saturday at Central Milton Keynes rail station

A peaceful protest in solidarity with George Floyd is planned on Saturday afternoon in MK.

The event is organised by Black Lives Matter and a Facebook group called Stand Up To Racism Milton Keynes.

It is being held to show solidarity for George Floyd as well as all victims of police and non police racism in the US and UK.

Protesters will gather outside CMK rail station at 12 noon.

Stand Up to Racism Milton Keynes has 186 members. It's aim is to achieve a "united, vibrant, vocal anti-racist and anti-fascist prominence in Milton Keynes".

Black Lives Matter (BLM) is an international human rights movement, originating in the African American community, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards black people.

The group regularly holds protests speaking out against police killings of black people, and broader issues such as racial profiling, police brutality,and racial inequality in the United States criminal justice system.

Last night MK Council lit its civic offices up in purple to show solidarity with George Floyd, who was killed after being forcibly held down by police officers in Minneapolis last week.

His death, now classified as homicide after a post mortem, has sparked widespread protests and rioting in the USA.

An council spokesman said yesterday: "Milton Keynes Council will stand in solidarity with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities around the world this evening, as it lights the civic building purple to remember George Floyd and stand up for justice."
