Casino to reopen in Milton Keynes city centre

The city centre casino is to reopen after being sold to a Milton Keynes-based company.

Casino MK ceased trading abruptly in April this year after its operators Aspers UK Holdings Limited went into administration.

At the time, administrators admitted it was not possible to complete a sale.

But this week gaming company Merkur has announced it has completed the purchase of the venue and has plans to reopen with local job creation and expanded gaming options.

The company, which has its national headquarters in Milton Keynes, says it is already planning a recruitment drive aimed at creating local jobs for both new and former employees of the casino.

The reopened casino will offer blackjack, poker, roulette and modern slot titles, with planned upgrades to align with Merkur’s brand standards.

The acquisition follows the 2023 launch of Merkur’s Aberdeen casino, which the company says has demonstrated strong demand.

Merkur Casino UK COO Mark Schertle said: “The venue has played a significant role in the local leisure and entertainment market. Our aim is to get the casino open again as quickly and smoothly as possible, and we are proud to be bringing more jobs to Milton Keynes, which is also the home of our headquarters.”

However, in April, the administrators for Aspers admitted Casino MK had been struggling, saying: "Aspers was materially impacted by COVID and, following a shift in customer habits, has struggled to return to pre-COVID trading levels, resulting in the need for ongoing stakeholder support, which has been exacerbated by underperforming units.”

The purchase price of the venue has not been disclosed.
