The Wolverton orchard is usually open every day of the year for people to enjoy and help themselves to its fruit.

But this week, just as many of the crops are ready to pick, the organisers were forced to lock the gates.

They said: "Due to ongoing antisocial behaviour and complaints from neighbours of the orchard, it is regrettably now locked until further notice. We have tried a number of measures but with no changes in behaviour."

It is believed young people had been using the orchard as a meeting place for gatherings and drinking.

Volunteer working sessions at the orchard will continue to be held every Tuesday between 10am and 2pm.

The facility was created in 2003 from a derelict allotment site and now houses more than 50 fruit trees, including apple, pear, cherry, plum, damson and mulberry. It also has a sensory garden, a wildlife pond and seating for people to relax.

One user wrote on social media: "It's always the few who spoil it for the many. I'm so sorry you have had to take such strong action."
