Milton Keynes Council is concerned about how many rats are running around close to primary schools and children's play parks on Conniburrow and Oldbrook.

As a result of pressure from Labour councillor Pauline Wallis, they have vowed to launch vermin treatment.

Contractors will also be removing rubbish, cutting back overgrown bushes and replacing planting.

A council spokesman said: "Problems on those estates are a concern due to how close they are to two primary schools, play parks and local centres with lots of litter being dropped as people pass through."

The deep clean, which will take place "over the next year" is part of city-wide plans proposed in next year’s budget, says the Labour administration.

But no other area have yet been named.

Councillor Wallis said: “We regularly hear from local people with concerns about rubbish and rats in these estates and I’m glad MK Council is including Conniburrow and Oldbrook in its deep-clean plans."

She added: “As a local resident myself I’m looking forward to seeing the work go ahead and am glad to see our council is committed to getting the basics right across the city.”
