Gas masks on the train and empty shelves in shops as coronavirus panic grips Milton Keynes

A  coronavirus-conscious commuter has become a Twitter hit after decking himself out in a heavy duty gas mask before stepping on a train.

The photo was snapped as passengers boarded at Central Milton Keynes station yesterday and is now being shared on Twitter.

"The man was just standing there calmly - but the look on his fellow commuter's face is priceless!" said one traveller.

As panic swept through the country, commuters took to wearing masks, plastic bags and even storage boxes to protect themselves against the killer virus.

The government announced this afternoon that the number of people testing positive for the virus in the UK has risen by a further ...... today. The total now stands at .

But Milton Keynes still seems to be clear, with the nearest diagnosed cases in Hertfordshire and Northamptonshire.

This afternoon 30 more coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the UK, bringing the total to 115.

Eight of the newly-diagnosed patients have no connection to overseas travel and health officials do not know how they contracted the virus.

Meanwhile shops all over Milton Keynes have empty shelves as people are panic buying hand sanitiser, anti-bacterial soap and wipes, toilet rolls and non-perishable food.

"It's crazy - I've never seen people buying so much. I'm sure there is no need for people to react quite so dramatically," said one shopper in Asda today.
