Teacher Julia Scott's first novel, Beth, is about the story of a a 15-year-old girl who discovers she's pregnant but, as far as she's concerned, she's still an innocent virgin.

The mother-of-four from Olney said: "It's a gritty subject, abortion, because it has to be something I'm passionate about if I'm going to spend months of my life writing it."

Julia went on to explain the plot. She said: "Beth's in denial and can't accept the impossible, so she does what we all do occasionally - she ignores the problem and hopes it goes away. What happens to her and how it affects all those around her, together with all their own life experiences, reflects many of the challenges of modern society.

"This is a story for everyone and anyone of 14 years upwards and, hopefully, it will encourage discussion and debate late into the night."

Julia, who is currently teaching from home, said the publication of the book was one of her greatest achievements and that there is a 'tough' sequel on the way this February about assisted suicide.
