Milton Keynes MP welcomes one of first decisions by new Prime Minister to cut taxes on electricity bills
A Milton Keynes MP has welcomed one of the first decisions by new Prime Minister Andy Burnham to cut taxes on electricity bills.
Emily Darlington, the Labour Member of Parliament for the Milton Keynes Central constituency, welcomed the move, saying it would provide ‘reassurance’ for residents during the winter months.
Mr Burnham said the tax cut would remove VAT from domestic electricity bills from October 1 in time to impact the next Ofgem price cap.
The Prime Minister added the tax cut would be funded by the cancellation of the Digital ID programme.

Mr Burnham said: “Westminster has not been working for people for too long, and that needs to change.
“I said I wanted to give people breathing space, and that’s what I’m announcing on my second day as Prime Minister.
“We’re taking immediate action to cut taxes on energy bills, put more money in people’s pockets and bring back hope.”
Emily Darlington added: “This comes as such welcome news from the new Prime Minister.
“On the doorstep in Milton Keynes I hear repeatedly how people are struggling with the cost of living.
“Giving every household a bit of relief from that is exactly what Government should be doing, and I hope to see more action like this over the coming weeks and months.”
Opposition parties have welcomed Mr Burnham’s announcement, with the Conservative Party welcoming the move but questioning how it will be funded, and the Liberal Democrats arguing that it does not go far enough.
During his first cabinet meeting today (Tuesday), Mr Burnham said the Government would “show how we are going to pay for policies”, as reported by the BBC.
