This mean the city has exceed its annual housebuilding targets set by the Government’s Housing Delivery Test.

Previously it was struggling to reach these targets, which this time ruled 4,866 new homes should be built during 2017-2020.

MK beat the target by almost 500, delivering 5,342 in total. Of these, 1,149 were classed as "affordable homes", says the council.

"In the year 2019/20 alone, and despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, more than 2,000 new homes have been built across MK," said a spokesman.

MK Council has set out its most ambitious and greenest council house building plan for a generation, with plans to deliver 1,200 new council homes by 2030. These properties will be some of Milton Keynes’ most accessible and environmentally friendly homes, they say.

Leader of MK Council, Cllr Pete Marland said: “The number of homes being built in MK is a testament to our future growth plans for the city. While the numbers we are delivering are good, we want to see far more genuinely affordable homes and council homes built to ensure there are a range of homes that everyone can afford, and we will continue to push for that in the future.”
