"We spent hours chatting to him, reminiscing about our childhood and our wonderful mother. We shared laughter a tears together," said Hannah and Lucy.

"Whilst he’d been in so many hearts for just a short time, he was an incredible father and grandfather, and he will stay alive in our hearts forever.

"The last year of our father's life was remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he's never dreamed of before."

They added: "Over the past few days our father spoke a great deal about the last 12 months and how proud he felt at being able to leave behind the growing legacy of his Foundation.

The family has praised NHS staff for their "unfalteringly professional" care and compassion.

Second world war veteran Captain Moore raised almost £39m for NHS charities during the first coronavirus lockdown in spring 2020.

He became the hero of the nation after breaking two Guinness World Records – becoming the oldest person to get a No 1 single in the UK charts and raising the most money ever for doing a solo charity walk.
