Drivers were concerned the man was in danger because he was walking along country roads and could not be easily seen in the dark.

"Cars have narrowly avoided hitting him," said a police spokesman.

He added: "The elderly male has been spoken to, says he has been doing it all his life and has been issued with a high-vis jacket, which he has agreed to wear."

Members of the public say the man has walked long distances usually between North Crawley and Newport Pagnell, for as long as they can remember.

One said: "He’s been doing it for all of my 40 odd years. A unique man, shall we say."

Another said: "He's fine, hes still got his wits about him and all the drivers give him a wide birth."

Police have urged people to wear high visibility clothing to reduce the risk of accidents when they are out walking.

"When you wear reflective gear, you avoid appearing "invisible" to drivers. Also if possible, make sure you face oncoming traffic so that drivers can see you and you can see them coming," said the spokesman.
