Councillor Pete Marland said an average of 40 new cases a day are being confirmed in MK and the number of severe cases needing hospital treatment is increasing.

He said: "Please avoid all non-essential travel out of Milton Keynes... You're only able to leave your home for essential reasons only, such as to buy food, exercise or other activities permitted in the government guidance."

Pete urged people who are clinically vulnerable to take extra precautions and to call the council's helpline on 01908 252398 if they need help to keep themselves safe.

People should also work from home wherever possible, he said.

"Our main aim to get our infection rate down so when the lockdown ends, we stand the best chance of being placed in a lower tier with fewer restrictions.

"We will only do that if you all follow the rules, and in particular working from home unless you are unable to do so."

Currently the infection rate in MK is 108 per 100,000 of the population.

"We want to get that number as low as possible so we can exit lockdown in time for Christmas and not have severe restrictions in place," said Pete.

He added: "Lockdown isn't easy. I understand that. However, if we all do our bit it will put Milton Keynes in the best position when this lockdown ends. you will make a difference, help save lives and protect the NHS."

All non-essential retail outlets are now closed in MK, along with pubs, leisure centres, entertainment venues and gyms. Schools are open as normal, as is MK College.
