Marjory Benjamin was born in London and survived the Blitz working for the Post Office by day and in a fire brigade control room at night.

She was married for 70 years to husband Roy and they had two sons, Graham and Hugh. Roy was a pilot in the war and their marriage had to be postponed three times because he was recalled each time for urgent duty.

"Marjory not only received her card from the Queen, but she was also made to feel like a queen for the day herself with a sparkly tiara and a bright pink birthday sash," said a spokesman for the home.

Highclere was covered in decorations and a special ‘stop the clock’ was held at 12 noon for everyone to sing happy birthday. Marjory’s sons joined in through the window for a socially-distanced visit.

The spokesman said: "Marjory received many cards from other care homes, which she was delighted about. She also had lots of pre-recorded video messages from family far away, which she enjoyed listening to. Everyone went above and beyond to make the day special."

Marjory and Roy saved for years to buy their own house in Kent with a garden, which Marjory enjoyed keeping in order. Her other hobbies are sewing and painting, and she won praises for her artwork.

After retirement, the couple moved to Milton Keynes to be close to their sons, grandchildren and, now, great grandchildren.

Marjory said her secret to reaching 100 years is "believing in God, as he has kept me here."

She added: “The odd glass of sherry and the love of my family have kept me going."
