The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers has published a YouTube video explaining how such a tribute would sadly break social distancing rules.

A spokesman said: "The glorious sound of ringing is only achieved through groups of people gathering closely together as one person is needed for each and every bell in the tower."

He added: "We would love to go out and ring the bells in appreciation of key workers. Rest assured we will. but only when it is safe to do so.

"Ringing will return and we will celebrate together with the joyful sounds of bells."

MK councillor and former mayor Martin Petchey is a keen bellringer and had been planning, before lockdown, to help ring out a VE Day tribute at Woughton-on-the-Green church on VE Day.
