The long-term future of Newport Pagnell’s Middleton Pool and Willen Road Sports Ground looks to have been secured.

The centres were threatened with closure following a cut in grant funding of £114,672 from Milton Keynes Council.

However, Newport Pagnell Town Council has undertaken ‘some significant financial restructuring’ and is going into partnership with DC Leisure Management Ltd from April 1, to run the facilities.

The town council is also confident that a formal transfer of the facilities will go ahead as part of Milton Keynes Council’s Community Asset Transfer scheme.

John Smith, town council chairman, said: “This is very good news, both for users of the pool and sports ground and indeed for residents of Newport and the surrounding area.”

A spokesman for Milton Keynes Council said: “The proposed transfer comes under the council’s Community Asset Transfer scheme, which has been under way for some time now.

“We have worked very closely with the officers and councillors from Newport Pagnell Town Council to move this process along, and we’ve been pleased with the way the discussions have progressed.

“The town council recently submitted a Stage 2 Application and associated business plan detailing how they will run Middleton Pool, an important asset for the town.

“We hope to be able to make a final decision in early March once we are satisfied that the correct building blocks are in place for this transfer.”

The pool has attracts around 90,000 visitors per year, with the sports ground home to several football teams, as well as tennis and cricket clubs.
