People in Milton Keynes could get council tax discounts for being energy efficient

Energy conscious householders and business owners are invited to take part in a study that could lead to reduced council tax and business rates.

Milton Keynes Council has been allocated grant funding by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to determine whether a pilot of council tax and/or business rate incentives would encourage local people to be more energy efficient.

They believe that offering incentives could help Milton Keynes towards its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

The survey will capture attitudes towards green measures including upgrades to loft insultation and smart heating controls.

It’s part of a larger study funded by BEIS to assess if homeowners and business owners are prepared to play a bigger part in becoming energy efficient, and how local authorities can be part of the solution for the climate emergency.

Cabinet member with responsibility for climate change, Councillor Jenny Wilson-Marklew said: “This is an exciting opportunity for you and other residents to influence what incentives there are to help us all live more sustainable lives. Your thoughts will influence the government’s approach in helping councils tackle the climate emergency.”
