His words, published on a public Twitter account, refer to the late Tessa Jowell, who died of a brain tumour in 2018.

Mr Everitt wrote the post in 2011, long before he was an MP.

But it has never been removed from Twitter has this week resurfaced.

Dated April 24 2011, the post was reacting to Baroness Jowell's appearance on television in an interview with Andrew Marr. The then Labour MP was wearing a pink top with a flower design around the neckline.

A Twitter user called Lee Alley, who is followed by Mr Everitt, wrote: 'Why was Tessa Jowell on Andrew Marr in her nightdress this morning?'

Mt Everitt replied: 'Ooch. Not the best photo there. Looks like a tranny with a hangover. Not one for the family album."

The offending tweet was spotted this week by one of Mr Everitt's constituents, who said he was disgusted by it.

Mr Everitt told the MK Citizen this afternoon: “I wrote that tweet in 2011. I regret the choice of words. I apologise for any offence caused.”
