MKC said it is spending £50,000 on the improvements, which is part of its Getting the Basics Right programme of works.

An MKC spokesperson said the cobbled granite paving in Central Milton Keynes is part of the town's 'distinctive identity', and that it’s the first time in ten years this paving has been replaced.

Emily Darlington, from MKC, said the authority has listened to what residents have said about the town looking 'a litttle unloved'.

She said: "Even though we’ve had to make some cuts while dealing with extra demands for council services during the recession and Covid-19, we’ve invested in this essential programme to make MK cleaner, greener and help the centre be an attractive place for work and play.”

As well as looking better, the spokesperson said, the improvements mean less weeding will need to be done by council crews in the future.

The works also includes cleaning road signs and cutting back overgrown bushes.

The council also said it is upgrading the paving at the same time as other work by contractors, Serco and Ringway, to tidy the boulevards and trimming branches on trees, saving costs on doing this work separately.
