Lorraine Norton, a purchase ledger clerk at Praesepe in the city, has been commended for her bravery by her employer.

Lorraine, 60, has worked for the national leisure services group for five years, and it was thanks to her quick reactions that she was able to identify that her colleague was having an epileptic fit and what she needed to do to assist her.

Lorraine said: “The whole incident happened very quickly and initially it was unclear what was wrong with her. But as soon as I understood she was having an epileptic fit, I put my first-aider training into practice. It’s hard to remain calm under these circumstances but I had to make sure she was going to be fine.”

“I tried to assure my colleague that she was safe while on the floor. When she recovered, I familiarised her with the surroundings and put her into a supported seating position. I remained with her until her husband arrived to take her home. Fortunately, she has now fully recovered. I did what I knew was right at the time and I’m glad to have been able to help.”

Praesepe’s commercial director, Byron Evans added: “Lorraine is a great member of staff and often goes above and beyond the call of duty to help her colleagues, but this is on another level completely and she thoroughly deserves this award as acknowledgment of her act of heroism. Lorraine’s quick thinking led to the life of a colleague being saved. She is a fine example of how to remain calm under pressure.”

Lorraine was joined by colleagues in a surprise ceremony on Thursday, March 23. Praesepe’s CEO Nick Harding presented a certificate to mark her courageous actions, an Employee of the Month award and £250 of high street vouchers.

An epileptic fit needs immediate attention, and the faster the person receives medical help, the less damage is caused.
