The 1980 release is a Japanese interpretation of King Lear, and is being housed under the Stony Stratford Celebrates Shakespeare festival, which launched last week and will host events through to 2017.

‘A landmark of world cinema, this is a rousing, staggering epic and a haunting drama of timeless significance,’ declared Film4.

‘Ran’ stands for chaos, turmoil or fury in Japanese; all befitting Shakespeare’s vision of a nihilistic world turned upside down and revolting against its natural order; dramatising the pain and rage of ageing and its inevitable loss of control.

Get set for a journey and a half, and be in your seat ready for the 7.30pm start time.

You’ll need to get comfortable though – it clocks in at a whopping 156 minutes in length.
