The 36-year-old leaves Hearts to take control at Stadium MK with assistant manager Stevie Crawford joining him from Tynecastle.

Neilson though will not be in the dugout for Saturday's FA Cup game with Charlton Athletic. Instead, Richie Barker will remain in caretaker charge as Dons take on former boss Karl Robinson for the first time since he left at the end of October.

Dons first made contact with Hearts about acquiring Neilson's services on Sunday, before confirming their official approach for the Scot on Monday.

Having visited Milton Keynes on Tuesday, Neilson returned to Edinburgh on Wednesday to oversee his final game in charge of the Jambos, guiding them to a 2-0 win over Rangers which sent them second in the Scottish Premiership.

But the deal continued behind the scenes, with the clubs agreeing terms on Thursday for Neilson to complete the switch on Friday.
