Phillip Allen, 48, had taught at the school since 2011.

He faces three charges of making indecent images of children - one of them at category A, which is the highest possible level of indecent images.

As a result of the police investigation he no longer works at the school but Allen was a prominent figure in religious education.

He has been a member of the teacher panel of the Times Educational Supplement (TES), for which he writes frequently.

“No information has been provided to the school which suggests that these matters relate to any of our students, past or present, or children in the local area.”

Allen is due to appear in court for an initial hearing on Monday.
