Scout Association sees membership numbers rise in Milton Keynes

With an 11% increase in girls and a 10.5% increase in adult volunteers joining in the last 12 months, there are now more than 1600 boys, girls, and adult volunteers involved in Scouting in the town.

“Scouting provides a wide range of activities for young people and these range from abseiling to zorbing, craft to trampolining and caving to leadership,” said James Palin, lead volunteer for Buckinghamshire Scouts.

“People will also be able to develop everyday skills that will help them in life, such as team working, planning and leadership.”

Cub scout Lily-May said: “I’ve been involved for three years and we do so many different things. One week we may be out hiking in the woods, the next week we might be making something and the following week we may be learning about water and how it is not “on tap” in some Countries,” she said.

“I’ve also made lots of friends and got some badges.”

Cub Scouts from Milton Keynes recently attended a County camp, with more than 1000 people from across the County, to celebrate 100 years of Cubs and were visited by wildlife presenter Steve Backshall and former Rugby Union international Thom Evans.

The young people are also involved in project called “A Million Hands”. They have chosen to look at dementia, disability, mental wellbeing or water aid with the aim of building relationships in the community.
