The group is called Love in Action and members provide meals for up to 70 hungry people every Thursday night.

Spokesman Dawn Remy said: “Many of homeless do not have access to facilities to shower, bath or clean themselves.

“What is particularly disturbing is the female homeless who have young children, or the menstruating women who have pleaded with us over the years to have shower units so they could wash themselves.”

Love in Action members have now vowed to raise enough money to have industrial shower units fitted in their Thursday night base at Fishermead’s Seventh Day Adventist Church.

We have already raised £2000 through donations, gifts and fundraising events such as CD sales with all proceeds going to the project. We are now committed and need to raise a further £5000 to get the showers built,” said Dawn.

“We are doing all we can, but this is proving an immense challenge.”

The volunteers are holding a fundraising concert called It’s a Family Affair next month.

Dawn, who is a talented gospel singer and songwriter, will be performing alongside Shezekiel, Renee Drummond and Ben Danzie, the Praise team and other live bands.

It’s a Family Affair will take place on Saturday October 6 between 7pm and 9pm in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, at 4 Veryan Place, Fishermead.

Tickets are available on Eventbrite. Admission is free but the organisers are hoping people will donate on the night.
