TODAY is International Women’s Day, ‘a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.’
Here in the new city, the Desperate 2 Dance company mark the event by hosting a soul tribute concert tomorrow evening, at the Madcap Theatre in Wolverton.
Nicky Prince, the local lass with the enviable vocal ability will be letting her voice lead the proceedings, and the other singers on the bill.
Expect musical tributes to Sam Cooke, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Adele, Sade, Amy Winehouse, Lauren Hill and Marvin Gaye among them.
All great singers and no naff fillers.
“A selection of professional artists are donating their time to sing for you in this soul-flavoured, nightclub-style club event.
“Come, hum and dance your socks off!” invite organisers.
Tickets are £8 in advance, two quid more on the doors and we should say that a percentage of the proceeds from the tuneful bash will be put to good use – donated to a local women’s refuge.
IWD honours the brave suffragettes, and it reminds us that there is still work to be done, and attitudes to change.
In China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women’s Day is marked as a national holiday.
Here in Milton Keynes the singing will do the talking, from 8pm.
