Before Helen Elverson, the Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Magazine Yummy Mummy Slimmer of the Year 2012, had her children she was a slim, party-loving teenager.
But, after three pregnancies and change of lifestyle took their toll on her body, Helen’s weight shot up to a hefty 19 stone and she became a size 24.
After shedding an astounding 8st 7lb in just 14 months, 33-year old Helen, from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, now weighs 10st 7lb and is a stunning size 10. Helen is one of eight Slimmers of the Year 2012 who have lost a staggering 67st between them.
Helen received her award – along with £1,000 cash – from Rosemary Conley, CBE, at a glittering ceremony held at the London Marriott County Hall Hotel on Wednesday.
Helen joined her local Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Club when her eldest daughter, 12-year old Sydney, who was also overweight, admitted she was worried she would get bullied about her size at her new school. “I knew the only way she was going to learn was if I led by example,” says Helen, who changed the whole family’s eating habits as well as her own and helped her daughter to lose her extra pounds to now be happy with her body.
After discovering she was pregnant at the age of 19, Helen and her now husband, Ian, bought a house together and swapped nights out with groups of friends to nights in eating takeaways. “We lived on pizza, Big Macs, Chinese, curries, and anything from the chip shop,” adds Helen. “I also ate crisps constantly and would snack on five bags a day, plus cakes, pastries and chocolates.”
By the time Helen’s first daughter was born she had put on 5 stone. “I was so wrapped up in my baby, I just didn’t care what I looked like,” Helen says. “It wasn’t just baby cravings, it was me being a pig and I reckon I was getting through 4,000 calories some days.”
When Helen’s second child, Morgan, was born she found herself at home during the day with two children under the age of two. And, after Helen’s third child, Hope, started school in 2009, Helen began working in the evening, leaving the days free for her to spend eating junk food.
“I had no interests, no hobbies and no social life,” says Helen, who thought that good mothers did not have the right to worry about themselves. “I was a size 24 and was beginning to struggle with things like tying my own shoe laces. I was always tired and my skin was horrendous with spots. I was too terrified to go on the rides at theme parks as I thought the safety belt or bar wouldn’t fit, or that I would be asked to leave the ride,” adds Helen, who also suffered from terrible back pain.
Helen joined the Rosemary Conley Club in May 2010 and began cooking the low-fat versions of the families’ favourite recipes at home. By Christmas last year, Helen had shed 6 stone and felt confident enough to go to her first New Year’s party in years. By July 2011, just 14 months after joining the Club, Helen succeeded in reaching her target weight. “Now I can walk into any room and feel like an ordinary person. I get up in the morning and I’m full of energy, my back pains have disappeared and my skin has cleared,” adds Helen.
“We’re now able to go cycling together as a family and I love going to theme parks with the children. However, my best moment was when my daughter took me to her school’s parents’ evening and showed me off to her teachers and friends. I felt on top of the world,” says Helen.
